Dame Judy Dench considers retirement as her vision worsening

Dame Judy Dench is one of the best known actors of this and previous generations, who has stood out in several iconic roles including Lady Macbeth, Ophelia, Juliet, M in James Bond, Queen Victoria and many others. She has over 130 actor credits as per IMDB page but has worked in countless more theatre productions.

Dench was born in York on 9 December 1934. Dench attended the Mount School, a Quaker independent secondary school. She made her first professional appearance in September 1957 as Ophelia in Hamlet at the Royal Court Theater in Liverpool.

Her timeless presence has been reassuring and consistent making her one of the stalwarts of the British theatre and performing arts.

Now, the almost nonagenarian is considering announcing her retirement from acting. She was last seen  in the musical ‘Spirited’ in 2022.

Dame Judy Dench was awarded her Damehood in 1988 for outstanding achievement and services in the field of acting. She has also won an Oscar, two golden globes, 10 BAFTA awards, multiple Emmys and Screen Actors Guild Awards among several other awards and accolades.

Dench suffers from macular degeneration, and her vision has almost completely gone making acting almost untenable. When asked about her next role, she replied “I don't want to retire. I'm not doing much at the moment because I can't see. It's bad.”
